The 1st Stankovic Cup was held in Beijing in July, 2005. The Stankovic Continental Champions Cup is founded by FIBA (International Basketball Federation) President, Dr. Carl MenKy Ching. The purpose of this Cup is to honor Mr. Borislav Stankovic, FIBA Secretary General Emeritus, for his significant contribution to the world of basketball and consequently, the tournament is named after him.
Being the only Chinese president of the 28 International Sport Federations , Dr. Carl Men Ky Ching has selected China to be the hosting country for the Cup. The Cup is organized to promote basketball in China and to provide an opportunity for the Chinese Men National Team to compete with other international champions.
The 2nd Stankovic Continental Champions Cup will be held between August 11-15, 2006 in Jiangsu, China. There are six teams all ranked in the top world ranking and they are the Asia champion, China, Europe champion, Greece, Oceania champion, Australia, Americas champion, Brazil, Europe 1st Runner-up, Germany, and Europe 2nd Runner-up, France.
The 2006 Stankovic Continental Champions Cup will be a sensational basketball tournament this year in China because these six national teams will be competing for the FIBA World Championship 2006 in Japan starting from August 19.
The 2006 Stankovic Continental Champions Cup will be the last competition for these teams before going to Japan and therefore, they will have their strongest players participating to the Cup and the Chinese audiences will have this extraordinary opportunity to watch this world class basketball event in China.
